After Almost 2 Months, Apple Stops Blocking Telegram Updates

UPDATE (6/4): Apple tree's well-nigh two-month block preventing Telegram from updating its iOS app has ended.

In a Friday tweet, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov thanked Apple and its CEO Tim Melt for finally approving Telegram'south latest iOS update. The update, which is available for download now, aims to bring Telegram into compliance with European Union's Full general Information Protection Regulation.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on Thursday revealed that Apple has been blocking the company's iOS updates ever since Russian authorities ordered Cupertino to remove the encrypted messaging app from its App Store. As a upshot, "some Telegram features, such as stickers, don't work correctly under iOS 11.4 … even though we fixed this issue weeks ago," Durov wrote.

Russian land communications watchdog Roskomnadzor blocked Telegram on Apr 16 over the company'southward repeated refusal to hand over the encryption keys to its messaging service. The country's Federal Security Service has been demanding admission to those keys, citing Telegram's use among terrorists, including a suicide bomber who killed fifteen people in Saint petersburg in April 2022.

"We believe we did the only possible affair, preserving the correct of our users to privacy in a troubled land," Durov wrote today. "Unfortunately, Apple didn't side with u.s.. While Russia makes up only vii percent of Telegram's userbase, Apple is restricting updates for all Telegram users around the globe since mid-April."

Apple's decision to block Telegram updates also prevents the app maker from being able to fully comply with the European Spousal relationship's General Data Protection Regulation, which went into issue on May 25, Durov added.

"We are continuing our efforts to resolve the state of affairs and will continue yous updated," he wrote.

Since the cake, Russian users have flocked to VPN services to continue using Telegram. Russia has reportedly responded by blocking VPNs, yet Russians continue to find new admission routes, turning this into a cat and mouse game.
